I’m obsessive. I’m also an addict. No, really… A card-carrying, real, live, honest-to-goodness recovering alcoholic and drug addict. While the substance abuse has been at bay for a long time now, my thirst for MORE has carried over to my track time and for at least the past 6 years; I’ve treated myself to double helpings of track time at the DOCC events. A registration for the Hot Shoe class (for the Loud Bike du jour) and one for the Red (fast touring) class for play time on whatever passes for my street bike.
At the DOCC’s Grattan event couple of years ago, my street ride was the Buell XB9S and as I came up beside Mike Cecchini entering Grattan’s front straight, I was delighted to find that my Buell and his beautiful (and tastefully modified Monster) were perfectly matched for speed down the straight. Not only that, but Mike is a very experienced, predictable and stylish rider, so all the elements for some wicked play racing were present. And so began the tradition of the Mike & Steve GP. Mike and I would spend 20 minutes trying to set each other up for close and challenging – but safe passes and come away from each session feeling like we’d had so much fun that the authorities were bound to come and take us away any minute. In ’04 Mike sponsored me into the 3-day SSR event (if I told you, I’d have to kill you) that precedes the DOCC party and his son Adam (on another Monster) joined the GP. Three abreast corner entries, killer passes, and equal bikes all meant huge fun at a brisk, manageable pace. As a side benefit, Mike’s times started to come down.
This past year, Adam couldn’t make it, and my new ride was The Cadillac (the 900SS-powered ’90 750 Sport). Mike’s times came down yet another few seconds and we had a riot every time we went out. As a bonus, DOCC member Chris Edwards caught us on film and I can’t stop watching the video clip. Enjoy...
